An Introduction to Batch Brewing

Batch brewing has found a place in many home and workplace brewing setups, promising convenience and consistency. This method involves brewing larger quantities of coffee at once, typically using a drip coffee maker like the Moccamaster or a pour-over setup with a larger capacity. With batch brewing, coffee enthusiasts can enjoy multiple cups of coffee with minimal effort, making it ideal for busy mornings or gatherings. While this method may lack the precision and customization of other methods, its simplicity and efficiency make it a staple in many households.

What you’ll need

  • Freshly ground coffee (medium coarse)

  • cold filtered water

  • A Moccamaster

Picking the best coffee for Moccamaster brewing

For Moccamaster brewing, selecting high-quality, freshly roasted coffee beans is paramount. Opt for medium to medium-dark roasts, as these typically offer a balanced flavor profile that complements the Moccamaster's precision brewing. Look for single origins or blends with tasting notes that resonate with your palate preferences. With its ability to extract rich flavors and aromas, the Moccamaster can showcase the best characteristics of your coffee, resulting in a consistently delicious cup with every brew.

Recommended recipe

For batch brewing, we recommend starting with a ratio of around 1:18 when it comes to your ground coffee and water. For a large batch brew (4-5 cups) we recommend using the below recipe:

  • 70 grams (approx. 14 tbsp) freshly ground coffee

  • 1.25l cold filtered water

A step-by-step guide for Moccamaster brewing

Step One - Place a paper filter in the black drip cone and rinse with water to remove any papery residue. Add your ground coffee.

Step Two - Fill the clear tank with cold water. Esure the slide gate on the black cone is closed.

Step Three - Flick the brew switch on.

Step Four - Wait 30 seconds to let the coffee ‘bloom’ and then open the slide gate. The brew will take about 5-6 minutes - once the tank is empty, turn the machine off.

Additional Tips

  • For large brews (750ml–1L), the grind size should be a bit coarser than for pour-over and finer than for plunger.

  • If you’re making a large batch, once the coffee is covered with water, give it a light stir to break up any dry spots and make sure all the grounds are wet. This will help to achieve a more even extraction.

  • For smaller brews with your batch brewer, just stick with the ratio of 55g of coffee/1L water (i.e. to make around 2 cups, use 500g of water and 23g of coffee).

  • If you live somewhere with hard water, we recommend descaling your Moccamaster every 3 months.

  • If you find that your brew is weak or watery, increase the dose of coffee in 5g increments. If it is too strong or heavy, decrease in similar increments.
